Location services stopped working

My iPad can’t be located by my iPhone, automatic time settings are not working and google maps doesn’t show my present location. All settings are set correctly. Hard reset doesn’t help. I signed out from iCloud & back in and location services (GPS) began working, however after a period of short time the same problem retuned. More puzzling is that the same problem occurs my wife’s iPad while location services works fine on both our iPhones.

That sounds like you don’t have Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on, or the network settings are corrupted. If you are sure Wi-Fi is on:

Do you use VPN? If so, delete the VPN profile in Settings/General/VPN & Device Management/VPN. Don't just turn it off; delete the profile.

For network settings:

  • Open Settings
    • Tap General
    • Tap Transfer or Reset Phone
    • Tap  Reset
    • Tap Reset Network Settings

    • This will erase all Wi-Fi passwords, but will not result in any other data loss.

After thoroughly examining this problem & also changing my modem router it appears that this issue occurs only in my building. When I distance myself about 40 meters from my building, Location services function properly. The only explanation in that there is some type of interference in my building.

GPS using satnav only works outdoors with a clear view of the sky in all directions. It doesn’t work at all indoors, so Apple and other manufacturers support “aGPS” or Assisted GPS, implemented by tracking you by the known locations of millions of Wi-Fi networks around the world. But for this to work you must leave Wi-Fi on all the time. You don’t have to connect to Wi-Fi, but Wi-Fi hotspots continuously broadcast their “Wi-Fi” addresses, so when your phone sees the broadcast it knows your location, because hotspots only have a range of about 30 meters (100 feet). And if the iPhone can detect more than one hotspot it can narrow your location further.
