How to move pics from iPhone to PC as JPG

HEIC pics are worthless. Imagine going to Grandma's house after she passes and finding a box of photos with only the date taken and location on the back. The pictures are basically worthless. That's HEIC.

But if she wrote the names of the people, event or other information on them, the pictures are much more valuable. With JPGs, that information can be entered in the metadata.

HEIC files are ABSOLUTELY WORTHLESS!

In the past I was able to convert them from HEIC to JPG when moving from my iPhone to my PC. But no longer. What happened?

It works like this in iPad and iPhone should be about the same. Choose the bolded options if your device can not handle modern codecs.

Set the device shoot either .heic and HEVC or .jpg and H.264:

Settings > Camera > Formats > CAMERA CAPTURE > High Efficiency (HEIF/HEVC) / Most Compatible (JPEG/H.264) capture.

Set the device to transfer and convert previously shot .heic and HEVC to .jpg or H.264 if the receiving device can not handle those formats:

Settings > Apps > Photos > TRANSFER TO MAC OR PC > Automatic (converts HEIF to JPEG on Windows 10 etc) / Keep Originals (transfers HEIF to Windows 10 even if it can not display it).

I bet there are also apps that can convert .heic to .jpg on Windows.

Any decent image editing application should be able to write XMP metadata (captions, keywords etc) to .heic as well as to .jpg.
