Hi, Paulette201, looks like a MagSafe charging socket to me… could be MagSafe 1 or 2.. a model number would be helpful… you can find it somewhere on the outside of your Mac laptop, or if it has a removable battery, under that… it starts with A, then 4 numbers or digits..eg “A-XXXX” .. going to everymac.com with that and cross-referencing will get you the charger type and plug on it
hope this helps

You can find that website here: https://everymac.com/
If you do a search on that site, you will find that the A1278 model number comes up with a number of Apple MacBook Pro models that range from those that came out between 2009 thru 2012 ... so this laptop is a bit older that you may think.
What would help would be to get the laptop's ID number, something like: MacBookPro7,1. Getting this number would be by going to System Information ... but to try to give you exact directions would require that we know which version of macOS or OS X this Mac is running currently.
Thank you John!
