How can I enable screen mirror on MacBook Air?

Hi! I recently updated my MacBook Air to Monterey, after I heard that updating the OS could help me with screen mirroring. Previously, I had the issue where attempting to find AirPlay devices only had the option "off" in the dropdown menu, as described here No option to turn Airplay on in Preferenc… - Apple Community . Now I don't even have access to the dropdown menu. What should I do in order to enable screen mirroring? Thanks!

Hi, thanks for answering again! I'm not sure any connections are enabled as I've been trying to access AirPlay/screen mirroring from my iPhone, so no physical connections or cables involved. The reason I tried going through system preferences is simply because when I tried spotlight searching AirPlay and toggling screen mirroring from the top bar, they both go to System Preferences ^^; My iPhone shows only the loading symbol when searching for devices to cast or mirror too as well, so I guess there could be a problem on that end...
