Laptop (BIG SUR 11.7.6) lets me import cds but iMac. (SONOMA 14.6.1) does not

On the imac using an external Apple CD player connected from the back of the computer. After inserting CD I check import CD and get the 54 error message. I have gone to music settings then files. I have tried turning off/on use error correction when reading Audio CDs after clicking import settings but still keep getting "Error message 54"

This does not happen on the old laptop (circa 2014)and prior to 2 weeks ago this did not happen on the iMac either
