Playing live photos in ios 18

When trying to play certain live photos in the photos app I get the error message:

"Unable to Play Live Photo

The operation could not be completed"

I know that the live portion exists because I was able to download the .mov file from icloud and play it, but it won't play within the app for a subset of photos.

Is there something I can do to fix this?

Note: all my photos are stored in icloud and I have my photos set for the originals to be downloaded on my phone. iPhone 16 pro on ios 18.0/18.0.1

Some new info on this. The issue is only with the Library section of the photos app. If you add the affected photos to an album and view them from that album then the Live Photo plays just fine. But it’s very inconvenient to have to navigate to the albums in the new photos app just for a specific subset of photos.

Same thing is happening to me 5 days ago.

Another thing that is curious is that if I edit the photo (add a filter or select a new frame as the key photo, the problem will be solved). It is so annoying. If you come to a solution, please share it.

Or if you have a Live Photo as a favourite and view the photo through that album.

The same thing if you delete the Live Photo, it will also work on Latest deleted album

Yeah, editing the photos fixes it for me until I go back to the library view. Then it reverts back to the same exclamation point error. :/

Editing the photo directly on the library solves the issue for me. Either way it sounds like a bug/software issue related to ios 18. It is so frustrating
