Holding key to reveal accents no longer working in MacOS Sequoia!

With the recent update to MacOS (MacOS Sequoia 15.0.1), my computer has been dumbed down in several ways! MacOS 15.0.1 is so apparently buggy that it is not funny.

To be clear, up until this recent update, holding down a key revealed an on-screen pop-up that would reveal other options for using that letter. It looked like this;

Selecting the number below the letter (and its accompanying accent), then insert that particular version of the letter into the place where your cursor was.

This feature is now not working.

What is concerning is that we are being told to boot into safe mode, see if this issue repeats itself there, and then, if so, do a clean installation of MacOS.

Are you kidding? This is so blatantly lousy execution on Apple's part, and asking us to spend time toying with our previously fine machines is not funny. The time and effort required to wipe down a computer, set it back up again, and then potentially face the same issue is not simply like snapping one's fingers. It's a significant inconvenience and a waste of our time.

Updates need to be better than this!

Not coincidentally, the keyboard shortcut Control + Command + Space to open the Character Viewer is also not working correctly. 😠

That really is concerning, since the way to make the accent menu come or go has been available online since this feature was added to MacOS in 2011. Back then, many users hated it and wanted it gone. Now most love it and are annoyed when it sometimes disappears.

Regarding Character Viewer, Apple's Sequoia manual has the following for default shortcuts:

So far, the above suggestions from Tom Gewecke have helped. Now, let us see if they stick! I'll work as usual and update you later. The long press key for accents feature worked with è, as did the keyboard shortcut Control + Command + Space to open the Character Viewer 😊.

I hope this can help someone else.

Thanks for the reply, tip & follow up. Much appreciated. 👍

That feature has always worked until only recently. My gripe is basically that this and a bunch of other things that are a suddenly very obviously not right and I’ve never experienced this with any update in the past.

Leads me to believe thatbthe OS is to much for the 8gb versions of Mac’s.

Either way, your tip terminal command so far appears to have helped.

Thanks.

It's true that quite a few people have found strange things happening with recent updates. In addition to the disappearing accent menu, common glitches are space bar not working in various apps (caused by Full Keyboard Access being turned on) and 789uiojkl not working (caused Mouse Keys being turned on). How such things get activated without the user doing anything is a mystery.
