Carplay side bar not responding

Since ios 17.7 (now on ios 18), the side bar of Carplay doesn’t respond on touch. No reaction trying to select any of the three latest apps or the home button. The only way for me to switch apps is either by asking Siri to change apps or if I close Waze on the mobile. The latter will display the Carplay screen where all apps can be found and I can select any app there. I have restarted the infotainment (it has the latest update) and the phone. I have also disconnected the phone from Carplay and reconnected without changed behavior.

I have only read a few people reporting this online, so I’m wondering if it’s a known bug?

There are no other issues with the phone or the infotainment system.

No reply yet so I guess it’s an unusual ussue, but a couple of people with the same issue. Anyone from Apple support that can contribute here?

Just to give an example that is so annoying; You navigate using Waze and you need to make phone call. Siri will start the phone app and you make the call. As the call is started you want to see Waze in Carplay but that’s not possible. Siri doesn’t respond during the call, so you’re stuck with the phone app in the infotainment window until you end the call. This never happened before.

That’s interesting,

Yesterday I tried to press the side bar icons multiple times and suddenly I could switch app, but only the lower one and not consistently.

Lately I’ve been suspecting the infotainment screen being broken at the screen area of the Carplay area, so it’s interesting that you have the same issue with a different car. Mine is a Cupra Formentor 2022.

I chatted with Apple support yesterday, they created a case and I will call their senior support today.

I’ve read that other people were helped by 18.2, but it didn’t help for me.

I had a (long) call with senior Apple support now. They have a few more cases like this but there is no solution yet. They analyzed my iPhone and I have done all that can be done. The only thing I hadn’t done was to rename the iPhone, so I did. Again, it didn’t help.

They will send this issue to Apple and hopefully get it fixed at some point.

Anyone with this issue; please inform Apple support about it.

They believe it’s a bug within iOS18 in combination with some car’s infotainment software, but there doesn’t seem to be a clear pattern.
