I'm sorry, what is this? (Disk unreadable—repeated warnings, system nearly frozen)

The warning is "Attached disk is not readable to this computer" (translated from Polish).

Several HDDs were connected via a USB hub.

I had to force-turn-off the laptop, as it was nearly unresponsive.

MacBook Air 13-inch, early 2015, macOS Monterey 12.4.

Disconnect all external devices from the laptop & reboot the laptop.


After logging into your macOS user account, connect one external drive directly to the laptop to test if it triggers the problem. If it is Ok, eject the drive & disconnect it. Plug in the next drive...repeat for each external drive. If all external drives are fine when connected individually and with no other devices connected, then those drives are probably fine.


Next connect your hub, but do not connect anything to the hub just yet. If the hub by itself doesn't trigger a problem, then now connect one external drive to the hub to see what happens. If the hub has multiple USB ports, then test that same drive in each of those ports. If everything is Ok, disconnect the drive & start again with the next drive and so on & so on.


Next would be to connect another external device & see if it is Ok. Then with the hub & that other device connected, try once more with each of your drives.


If you connect multiple drives to this hub, then you will want to start small and connect just two of the drives. Keep experimenting with various combinations to see if a certain combination of devices triggers the problem.


You will also want to check your cables as well as well as making sure all cables connect securely.

Thanks for the replies.


Additional notes: the setup worked flawlessly with a Windows 10 machine. Disks and cables are okay.

I tried to connect disks one by one through the hub and it seems MacOS recognized and mounted all of them.

Not all of the disks were recognized and mounted previously, as well.

I now have 7 partitions/5 disks connected (including a pendrive), as well as a CD-R drive (no disc). NTFS disks, read-only, as standard under MacOS.

The hub is externally powered.


However, there seems to be a problem with the SD card. I've checked it on another machine and it has faults. I was convinced though, that it wasn't present when I grabbed this screenshot. But maybe it was. It would be the easiest conclusion.

Anyway I still wonder why would MacOS produce this flood of warnings instead of one.

My guess is that the SD card or the file system on the SD card was disappearing & reappearing to the system. That was definitely an extreme reaction. I've had issues with some prompts popping up immediately after clicking "Cancel" where it is nearly impossible to get past them to attempt to address the issue...sometimes I've seen a few pop-up windows appear, but nothing like anything shown in your picture. I've really only seen this type of behavior with macOS.


That picture may actually be a work of art ;-)
