Restarted because of problem system extension

When I shut down my Mac today, it immediately started up again. A notice appeared stating Restarted because of problem system extension. This was followed by a small window containing 8 pages of gibberish. Example below>

The previous day I updated to Mac OS 13.7 and this was the first shutdown since updating.

Now, every time I shut down, the Mac starts up again.

What do I do about these problem system extensions?

Thanks for reading.

Mac OS = Ventura 13.7

iMac = 27" 2020

Applications = Only Apple applications installed eg Pages iMovie GarageBand

Your iMac isn't actually shutting down. It is trying to shutdown, something causes a kernel panic after about 30 seconds and it restarts (which is stadard behaviour after a kernel panic).

The various messages indicate that during shutdown, the virtual USB bus in the logic board and the networking systems shut down (handler completed), but the USB IO subsystem (controlling stuff connected to the USB ports) and the storage controller didn't complete and may be the source of the problem...

Potential issues: malfunctioning USB connected peripheral or external drive, storage device issue, logic board issue or power problem. Hard to say without more diagnostics.

Suggestions to try: first, disconnect all peripherals, save keyboard/mouse. Try to restart and see if it works correctly - if so, one of the disconnected peripherals/drives was the issue. If that doesn't work and the issue persists, try running first aid on your disks - if issues are identified that will hopefully repair the disks or clearly indicate a drive issue. The third step would be a SMC reset - Reset the SMC of your Mac - Apple Support (CA).

If the issue persists after all of that, you are probably looking at reinstalling macOS (although that is unlikely to be the solution in this case), or more likely looking at a visit to a genius bar for diagnostics.
