My kids dad is organiser for his Apple ID. He has to authorise all apps etc. My child and I no longer have contact but he refuses to relinquish his role as controller of my child’s phone. He often doesn’t authorise apps etc and it causes problems. How can I swap it to my own ID as controller?

Leave the group if needed, create a new one, and invite the child to it. If the dad doesn't approve it and the child is under about 13 depending on the country, you may need to contact Apple Support.
