Macos Sequoia 15.0 and office 365 - not responding

Since installing macOS Sequoia (15.0), I've had a problem when I open a Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint file with Office 365 (latest version 16.89). The application doesn't respond. I have to force it to quit and open again: MS Word opened the file correctly. I've reinstalled Office several times, but the problem persists. In general, I can open one file, then application not responding.

Since the latest MacOS Sequoia 15.0 upgrade for the past few months, this "not responding" situation has made my life ****. Even the latest MacOS Sequoia 15.1 doesn't change that nightmare situation. Don't know who is responsible for this; Apple or Microsoft, but we end users are victims :-( Please Help!

I have two laptops, a MacBook Pro M1 2021 and a MacBook Air M1 2020. Both have been upgraded to macOS Sequoia. While the Microsoft apps work perfectly on the MacBook Pro, they are completely unresponsive on the MacBook Air. I’ve tried deleting and reinstalling the apps twice, but the issue persists. It’s very frustrating.

But the issue is persisting with the 15.0 stable release. The only thing that makes Office 365 (web) manageable is using the 'icon' view, everything else is just a blank page. Constant reloading after I click a link to open the link.


It is only an issue in Safari for me. Using Office 365 (web) with Firefox, everything works fine.

This worked for me: Open the Terminal and run the following commands:

/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/LaunchServices.framework/Versions/A/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user 


sudo /System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Frameworks/LaunchServices.framework/Support/lsregister -kill -seed -lint -r -f -v -dump -domain local -domain system -domain user -domain network

Safari v18, definitely "breaks" O365 online...on the other hand, Teams online, has been in "Preview" mode for Safari, for years, many years.???


Oddly, Google's online app get along well with Sequoia / Safari 18.???


Microsoft is pushing Microsoft Edge, Bing and Copilot...coincidence? If you want seamless compatibility with O365 online, use Microsoft's Edge browser.

I'm not familiar enough with Terminal so can someone tell me if running these commands could also affect the new user account I set up where I'm not having the same problem? I'd hate to do this only to discover that one had somehow got "infected" too.


And are these separate commands to be run sequentially or do I just paste the entire set into Terminal?

I understand your concern. In my case, I didn’t restore any files from Time Machine for exactly that reason — I didn’t want to risk reinstalling the same issue. Fortunately, all my Word documents were already saved in OneDrive, so I didn’t lose any data. As for the apps, I reinstalled everything from scratch, which seemed to prevent any old issues from reappearing. It’s definitely a bit of a hassle, but in my situation, it was worth it since Office 365 started working properly again after the reset.

So I really have to stop worrying about this issue since a new user account works just fine, but I thought I would throw this one out for others to try. I had to restore my original user account from Time Machine for an unrelated reason, and by some miracle I no longer have the issue with Word!


To be clear, this was a TM backup that I made this morning, when the old user account definitely still had the problem. So go figure.

After updating to macOS 15.1, my Microsoft 365 stopped working again. Unfortunately, I had to go through the factory reset process once more, followed by a complete reinstallation, to get it working properly.




For reference, I’m using an Apple M1 Pro with 32 GB of RAM. It seems like resetting to factory settings is the only reliable solution so far, but it’s definitely a hassle.

I had the same issue - I deleted and reinstalled, created new users as well as all other suggestions. Finally, I went to the Genius bar and they told me to turn off Auto Save in Excel. In Word, uncheck ALL option in Save Options, and restart the computer. It has been 2 weeks and it appears to be working ok.
