Imac Magic keyboard 2 some keys not working

I have had the issue of certain keys not working for some time but it became a real issue when one day I found I could not log in anymore because some of the number keys are used fo my log in and 2 of them just would not do anything.

It seemed that I had become the victim like so many others of the qwertyuiolk&m key issue. However with the addition of the number keys it was not exactly the same.

I tried all the “fixes” i could find like pressing the option key 5 times, long hold down of the option key, pressing the number 5 five times etc but to no avail!

It was obvious something had changed within the system after i realised I could log in as a guest and found some of the keys worked. So then I looked through the remedies of the system settings as given in this forum and found that the mouse key toggle was on under Lock screen - Accessibility Options. So I toggled it off which then triggered a pop up to give my admin user name and password. I immediately thought this was going to be an issue but no. Changed the setting and logged out of Guest and then I was able to log in again as myself.

However I then found i still had some issues with the qwertyuio keys not working. This turned out to be a simple cleaning fix.

Turn off the keyboard using the switch first then prise up from the bottom of the keys with a thin piece of plastic and they pop off. Use some alcohol cleaner with cotton buds to clean the plastic key and all round / over the top of the exposed key area. I fortunately have a portable compressor so I used this to blow out any bits that may be trapped under the key area plastic.

Popped the keys back in place and Voila all back working again.

I now make sure that I turn off my keyboard and cover it as it is entirely possible that as i live with 5 cats that one or more could have been playing patience on my keyboard over many nights and somehow changed the Lock screen setting as well as dropping bits from the bottom of their paws into the keys?

I hope this may be of use to someone else who has the same issue?

Update -

It seems i spoke too soon. the qwertyuio keys have stopped working again. I now suspect the battery is the culprit as apparently they swell with age and recharging. Time to make a decision - should i purchase a replacement battery and have a go at replacing myself which knowing the quality of aftermarket batteries for apple mobiles isnt a good option or purchase a newer s/h keyboard?
