Since updating my iPhone 14 to iOS 18, podcasts play continuously even though I have NOT selected that. Checking the Podcast Settings Continuous Play is not selected and is set to Off. However Podcasts play continuously anyway. What can I do to stop this behavior?

Same frustrating issue with “Continuous Playback” option being broken in iOS and iPadOS 18. Apple Podcasts app also marks episodes as “Played” before being played, it’s removing episodes from the Up NeXT queue before being played, it’s loading episodes automatically into the player marking it as played so if you choose a different episode, the one it automatically loaded into the player disappears from Up Next because it was marked as played. All very frustrating. 🙁👎🏼

I have the same issues with continuous playback and marking episodes as played without them actually playing. I have reported both to Apple.
Yes I see this randomly, too. It will also mark the next episode as played even if you don’t actually play it, so it’s very easy to accidentally miss an episode because it erroneously marks it as played.
I have send Feedback to Apple on this problem using the Apple Feedback website. Hopefully it will be corrected in a future iOS update.
I have the same problem with my iPhone 14 pro. Have tried setting and restarting all to no avail, very annoying.

Me too. In Settings, I have Continuous Playback turned off, but it still autoplays.
I usually listen to podcasts in bed. In the morning I have to set the podcast eps it played while i was asleep to unplayed. Aaargh.
Also reported this bug to Apple. Very strange. I hope this isn’t another one of those “we know what’s best for you” features from Apple. 😀
