Why can’t I update my iPad to ipadOS 18?

Why can’t I update my iPad to ipadOS 18? I initially downloaded 18, then it became not available. Now says that I am up to date with version 17.7 ??

Apple pulled iPadOS 18 for the M4 iPad Pros. Wait until the next update.

You are correct Niel.

I initially had downloaded iPadOS 18 for my M4 iPad Pro, but before I could install it, Apple pulled the release making 17.7 the latest version for M4 iPad Pros. From what I can gather, there is a software conflict with the M4 chip where users were getting “bricked in” -whatever that technical jargon means. I wish Apple would update their Apple support representatives so that no further time is wasted on trying various options in attempts to resolve this issue with other users like me. Best advice is to do nothing and wait for the next software update.

"Bricked", not "bricked in".

After some M4 iPad Pros were upgraded to iPadOS 18, they became inoperable, and thus about as useful as bricks (good for paperweights, but not much else). Hence, the saying that the update "bricked" them (as in, turned them into "bricks").

Stack Exchange – Etymology: "bricked" (to render an electronic device inoperable)

Apple didn't "brick" the M4 iPad Pros on purpose (as with stolen iPhones and Activation Lock). There is pretty clearly a bug that Apple failed to catch before iPadOS 18 went out. So far it appears to be specific to M4 iPad Pros, which would explain why Apple temporarily pulled the update for them, but not for other iPads.
