Excel files not opening on iPhone (iOS) and then suddenly on iPad too

I cannot open excel files on my what’s app or mail app. I have tried with fully licensed versions of excel and the problem persists. The excel app does open excel files on the cloud but none that are natively sitting in the files app on iPhone/ipad. If I try forward the file it keeps saying that’s it is a “Viber Message Document”. I then deleted Viber and still my iPhone cannot open any excel file and now just says “data”

Suddenly my connected iPad Pro cannot open any excel files on the mail app where What’s app or Viber have never been installed on that device. This too, just says “data” when clicking on the excel file. This file and many other excel files have been sent to friends and colleagues with iPhones (through What’s app and mail) and iPads (through mail) and these files open seamlessly on their devices as they once did on my iPhone. When re-installing Viber again it labels it as a “Viber Message Document”. I feel its almost as if Viber has somehow changed the way my iOS reads a file sent that is excel type ( Through What’s App or Mail or any other app that might be able to read that type of file). Apples Numbers cannot open the file either on the files app. I have tried to forward the file as suggested by another user but again there has been no solution, Please assist?

I have called apple support where they look at your phone with you viewing and actually controlling the phone (quite impressive) . But again no solution. I have tried to reset settings and default all settings, but to no solution. They said they have forwarded on to their developers to see if there is solution. Holding on, please let me know if you do end up finding a solution.

I looked on the community and I found now a temporary solution, that's not viable though in the long term because I have tons of files. If I rename them to a xls instead of keeping them as xlsx they will open, same for docs, rename them as doc and not docx and they will open, but I can't definitely manually rename them one by one since they are more than a thousand. At least I can open something that is urgent for now, see if that works for you as well.

I emailed again to the support and I'm waiting for a new message or call, but detinetely they have to find a way to solve this bug. Please when one us has a easier and permanent solution can advise the other.

Thanks a lot

I see what you have done and the same applies for me. As soon as I rename it to ".xls" it works but it's not a long-term solution as you say I too have hundreds of emails and documents. Problem is that no app recognizes the file (numbers, excel, whats app, viber, etc). Even in the files app it cannot allow me to share the file with excel or any other app that might be able to read the file. I even resorted to download another app that reads xlsx but again if I browse to the location on my iPhone, it does not recognize the file sitting there. Completely agreed as soon as I have a solution I will come back here, hopefully there is an ios update just because of this bug we have :)
