How to exit a document without saving it

I have read where folks were concerned about the auto-save feature of Numbers and Pages. It seems that the older systems allowed you to choose whether or not to save the document upon existing. This seems to have gone away. As I am fairly new to Apple devices, I have had to experiment a lot.

I found a work around for those times when you completely mess up a previously saved document, in either Numbers or Pages, and want to start back to the beginning. It really is quite simple. Before leaving the document in it's messed up state, save with a new name by tapping the "down arrow" immediately the the right of the document name at the top of the page. This brings up a drop-down menu where you can select to rename your messed up document, leaving the original document in it's original form. You can then go back to the original to modify it the way you intended. The messed up document can simply be deleted from the file folder. This works for both apps, Numbers and Pages. Try with a document you don't need to worry about. Hope you find this helpful.

This option still exists in macOS Sonoma. System Settings > Desktop & Dock & enable "Ask to keep changes when closing documents."
