Import digital8 footage in imovie

Hi, I managed to connect a trv240 to my imac, using a comprehensive set of adapters and cables. Importing hi8 cassettes is no problem but with digital8 the app cuts into small chunks of a few seconds and stores them in random order. Moreover the chunks do not have the complete footage if ever I succeed in sorting them in the right order

Hi,

Importing from digital tape can be hit or miss with iMovie. Sometimes it works well, sometimes it doesn't.

Try importing into QuickTimePlayer instead of iMovie (File/New Movie Recording).

Quicktime eliminates scene breaks and gives you one long clip, versus iMovie that breaks up the clip into scene breaks. Perhaps that will remedy your issue.

Just an update for anyone else - I connected my Digital 8 Sony TRV-730 to my Mac mini (M1) utilizing a DV cable to fire wire 800, connected to an adaptor from fire wire 800 female to TB2 male, connected to a TB2 female to C male, which plugs directly to the Mini. Using iMovie to import - I tried the import with OBS- however the Mini would not see the camera. Once I have the tapes into digital format as a file name - these can be accessed by a newer editor.

After days in forums and Apple support pages because iMovie only gave me a black screen when connected to my Sony Handycam, I was finally able import my mini DV tapes into my Macbook Pro (2019). My configuration for anyone in the same boat is Sony Handy Cam > DV Out Port (will not work with USB) > Firewire 800 cable > Thunderbolt 2 cable > Thunderbolt 3 cable (not USB C) > Quicktime > New Movie Recording > Hit the down arrow next to the record button > Select the Handycam as the video source > Also select the Handycam as the audio source from same menu. There are also additional import settings explained in this excellent tutorial
