Problems with Ken Burns on iMovie

I've been compiling a movie of our recent wedding and am becoming increasingly frustrated with the fact that most of the pictures will allow the animation of the Ken Burns I've applied but then others will not.

I've deleted those individual pictures and then added them again to try afresh but they will not animate as I wish.

A few did animate properly but then others didn't. I'm so confused to how to fix this problem and looking at all similar posts there seems to be some big issues with Ken Burns.

Sometimes when an iMovie feature fails to function properly it helps to delete preferences.

To delete preferences, open iMovie while holding down the Option and Command keys and select to delete preferences in the box that appears. iMovie will open in a new empty library. Reopen your old library to get back to your projects. (To reopen your old library close iMovie and go to your Movie folder or wherever you have your old iMovie library stored. Double click on the library’s icon.  iMovie will open in that library.) Possibly you may need to reboot to set the changes.  Deleting preferences is a safe procedure that will not cause data loss or disruption to your project.
