Messages splitting group message threads on MacOS and iPadOS

I've been using group message threads in Apple Messages for some time now but in the last few months I've had instances of the threads getting split up in the app. This first happened on my iPad Pro and now is happening on my iMac under Sonoma. I recently discovered the ability to name group message threads which seemed cool but now I'm seeing that I've got at least two separate message threads--one with the group name and another with just all the group members listed. To follow a conversation I have to read both threads and try to figure out who said what when. Very frustrating. Any solution to this?
