MacBook Pro won't charge after Sonoma 14.6.1 update
On August 16, 2024, I updated my 13-inch 2020 MacBook Pro to the latest version of macOS Sonoma 14.6.1 after the system prompted me to do so. Before this update, the device was working perfectly.
However, after completing the update, the MacBook stopped charging and was only functioning on battery power. I tried all the recommended solutions I found online, including resetting the SMC, but the issue persisted.
I contacted Apple support on August 17th and was advised to send the MacBook to a service center. However, the service center could only attend to me on August 23rd. Today, August 27th, I received a diagnosis stating that the MacBook's logic board needs to be replaced.
After receiving the diagnosis, I contacted Apple again, but the company refused to take responsibility for the issue. The representative claimed that, in their experience, this is an impossible situation to occur following a system update. However, I believe this possibility should not be dismissed, as I understand it can indeed happen, as I have seen this before (had a bricked Dell after a simple windows update).
Considering that the charging issue began immediately after the system update, I believe it is not fair for me to bear the cost of this replacement, as the device was in perfect condition before the Apple-provided update.
In addition, I performed all possible diagnostics with the support team. We reset the SMC, ran Apple's diagnostics upon system startup, repaired the disk, checked the battery status, swapped chargers, replaced cables, and tested all USB-C ports on the device. All diagnostics indicated that everything is fine. None of the chargers and cables tested were able to charge the MacBook, although they did charge other devices I own, like an iPhone 15 and an iPad. The USB-C ports are functioning because the MacBook recognized other connected devices. It just wouldn’t charge.
Now, the MacBook won't even turn on because the battery has completely discharged due to all the tests that were performed and an attempt to back up my information.
