How do i get the IPA characters on my macbook air ?

I have tried under the system settings - keyboard... but here there is no list of new keyboards to add only the british one which i am using. I have tried under system settings - general... but no mention of keyboards here either ! Any ideas?

To get the list of keyboards, you need to click on the + button at the very bottom of system settings / keyboard / text input / edit / input sources.

But there is no apple keyboard for ipa. For that you use Character Viewer.

Thankyou for replying. When I follow the above, after clicking 'edit' at text input, I have only "all input sources" and the British. There is no option to further click or select others!? There must be a way to add more than one keyboard! Any thoughts?

As posted earlier, “ you need to click on the + button at the very bottom “

Character viewer. That's the place. Thanks for your clear instructions. Have found symbols I can use for phonetic alphabet in there. Please is the best way to use them (while typing either direct online or in a document) to open the keyboard settings icon, character viewer, and click on the symbol? If there a quicker way? I teach English and want to be able to type the IPA characters for my students to see.
