I have tried shutting down and reconnecting. This worked once. Then the same problem occurred. I cannot find the drives in the disk utility. The drives work fine when I connect them the my computer running Windows 11. It all started after the latest update from Apple.
A drive that will not reveal BOTH its make&model and a reasonable non-zero size/capacity in Disk Utility when View: 'Show all Devices' is set, can not be Mounted, Repaired, or Used for any purpose.
if its cabling and power are adequate, the drive has DIED.
To what Mac computer are you trying to connect these, and what macOS version is it running?
Are these externals among the giant-capacity externals that seem too cheap?

Some of those scam drives are clever enough to get Windows to recognize them and report the inflated capacity, but they often don't twork on macOS, or macOS reveals their true size.
The issue is not the hardware. The problem occurred after the most recent update to Sonoma 14.6.1. This is an AppleM1 Pro with 16 GB. Both drives work on a Windows 11 operating system on an HP computer. This appears to be a problem created by Apple!

EXACTLY what cable is being used to make the connection -- what type: {USB, THUNDERBOLT-3, -4, other, unknown} and what length? what symbols on the ends? genuine thunderBolt?

Both drives worked before the update. Nothing has been changed except running the latest Apple update.
