Apple Podcasts marking episodes as played early

For a while, Apple Podcasts marks an episode is played well before I have finished listening to it.

this seems to most often occur (but not always) if Show B starts playing, but I want to listen to Show A first. I click play on Show A, and Show B gets marked as played. I only use the view for latest episodes, if that matters for reproducing this.

After I finish an episode, it automatically jumps to a different episode, puts it in play mode without actually starting it, and then marks it as played. Why has the podcasts app started marking episodes as played when they are only partly complete? For the last couple of months the podcasts app has become really irritating. I have some podcasts that I might listen to only once or twice a week, listening to other podcasts in between. These are podcasts with hundreds of episodes that I'm working my way through and I don't usually listen to a whole episode at a time. Until a couple of months ago, when I went back to listen to a podcast, the episode I'd previously been listening to would still be there, marked as unplayed, waiting for me to pick it up from where I'd left off. Now, even if I'm only 10% through an episode, if I come back to the podcast after a few days, the partially listened to episode has been marked as played. So first I have to scroll through hundreds of episodes to find the episode I was listening to and then I have to try to find the point I'd got to to restart listening. This is worse! I don't understand why this was changed and (assuming that there may be some people who prefer the new approach), I don't understand why it isn't an option that users can select. Is it a bug or a feature? Does anyone know?

Why are Apple Podcasts playing a random show by default when the current podcast ends? I am so frustrated listening to your podcast app. I typically listen to many episodes from one specific show, one after another. I don’t know if it was the iOS 18 update back in 2024, but for a long time now, each time an episode from a specific show ends, another show will play right afterwards— a show that I do not want to listen to. Even if I manually remove every single show from the Up Next area, the next day, there will be a whole bunch of random shows back in there. The only way to solve this annoyance is to uncheck continuous play. That doesn’t stop the random shows from appearing up next. It just stops those random shows from automatically playing after the episode that I am listening to ends. Less Posted [Edited by Moderator]
