Good afternoon Zelda,

If you have connected to a new network this message could be because the network is blocking certain protocols required for Private Relay or access to the Private Relay DNS Servers. If you return to your regular network and everything functions normally there is a very good chance that is why you received the notification.

If you have not changed networks then it is possible that you may have altered the packet filtering on your machine (Firewall) by installing an application or a VPN. Any application that makes changes to the pf.conf file in the /etc directory will trigger this alert as the Private Relay requires certain parameters to be in place. Incorrect permissions on the pf.conf file will also trigger this error. So if you recently installed a VPN this would be what has caused the change.

You can check by going to Settings and Network and see if you have a VPN configuration installed. You can also go to Setting / Privacy and Security / Extensions to see if you have recently installed any extensions that might conflict with your Private Relay. I hope that this helps to answer your equation and provide a workable solutions for you.
