Keynote image too big in 4:3 projector at 1024x768

I cannot get my 2021 MacBook Pro M1 to project Keynote slides to a 4:3 HDMI 1024x768 projector without it scaling down the full amount. But even then, the edges of the slide are cropped off. I cannot get the image small enough to fit the 1024x768. I'm not mirroring—I am using the current slide and next slide as the main display on the Powerbook.
