How do I remove the Bing virus on my macbook air?

I attempted to use Safari with Google set as my default browser, but suddenly Bing appeared instead. After some quick research on my phone, I discovered that this might be due to the Bing virus. I read that I should check Activity Monitor for suspicious activity. Now, I keep seeing 'root' and various strange process names.

Does anyone know how to solve this?

The user "root" is the OS and is on all device, so there is nothing suspicious there. To remove malware causing browser redirects, you have a couple of options:

  • Download the free version of MalwareBytes. There is no need to pay for any subscription and after it has removed the Malware, you can delete the app. Just use the Free Download option.

  • The other option is to review the excellent User Tip provided by John Galt for removal. If you need assistance with this approach, you can post a screenshot of the 3 folders that are identified there and we can help by telling you which files need to be removed.

All looks good there.

  • Are you still being redirected to Bing when doing a Google search in Safari?
  • Have you verified that the search engine in Safari has not changed at Safari > Settings > Search > Search Engine?
  • Does the redirect happen on every search?
  • Did you run MalwareBytes?

The next step would be to post the free version of the EtreCheck report using the Additional Text option when posting. The report does not contain any personal information, but will offer more information on what is going on with your computer. After you run the report, choose the Share Report option, then copy to clipboard. Paste it here after choosing the Additional Text option.

Can you verify if you are using MacOS 12.7 as shown in your tagline? The steps that follow will depend on the version of MacOS you are running.
