Messages not Syncing on Mac with Sonoma

Since upgrading to Sonoma, my Messages do not sync properly or promptly on my Macbook Pro M1 Max. It seems to sync messages randomly. Some messages (both iMessage or Text) will show up, while others are missing from the conversation. This issue has occurred since upgrading to Sonoma, and with every Sonoma update I have been hoping it will be fixed, but the issue remains.

I am running Sonoma 14.5. I have tried the following:

  • Restarting
  • Singing out of iCloud and Singing Back in
  • Manual Syncing via "Sync Now" in Messages Settings

It sounds like you've taken some basic troubleshooting steps. You might try this procedure:

  • Sign out of iMessage and Facetime on all of your devices. Sign out of iCloud Syncing. Restart everything.
  • Sign back into iMessage and Facetime on your iPhone. Once both are activated, turn them on again on your Mac.
  • Re-enable iCloud Syncing on both devices.
  • On your iPhone, go to Settings>Messages>Text Message Forwarding and make sure your Mac is selected.

See what happens.

Set up iCloud for Messages on all your devices - Apple Support (CA)

Set up iCloud for Messages on your Mac

  1. In the Messages app on your Mac, do one of the following:
    • macOS 13 or later: Choose Messages > Settings, click iMessage, then select Enable Messages in iCloud.
    • macOS 12 or earlier: Choose Messages > Preferences, click iMessage, then select Enable Messages in iCloud.
  1. Select which email addresses and phone numbers you want to send and receive messages from on your Mac.
  2. Any messages currently stored in iCloud are now accessible on your Mac, and any new messages you receive on your Mac will be stored in iCloud.
  3. Note: If you want to see SMS and MMS messages on your Mac, see the Apple Support article Forward SMS/MMS text messages from your iPhone to your Mac or iPad.
  4. To see Messages stored in iCloud, open the Messages app.

Note: If you want to turn off Messages in iCloud on your Mac, deselect Enable Messages in iCloud. You can choose to disable Messages in iCloud for all your devices, or just your Mac.

For more information on how to use Messages on your Mac, see the Send a message on Mac.

When you first turn on Messages in iCloud, it may take some time for all your messages to appear on each device. You can send and receive messages during this time.

If your messages aren’t syncing, check the requirements for Messages in iCloud and make sure your devices are up to date. See the Apple Support articles System requirements for iCloudUpdate your iPhone or iPad, or Update macOS on Mac.
