Join Clips greyed out

I have two clips in mp4 and there are two clips that I want to join together in iMovie. Can I not join clips made by other programs? Sorry - this is the first time I've used iMovie and I followed the instructions on how to join clips and got to this stage, but am not able to because "Join Clips" is greyed out. Is there another free editor that can do what I want to do, or is there some way to get that "Join Clips" to reappear?

Is there a size limit for clips? One of my clips is a it over 3GB long.

I'm on a late 2018 Macbook Pro with 8GB of Memory.

Hi,

First, there really is no need to join the clips together, because when you place the clips side by side in the timeline they will play seamlessly as the playhead moves through the two clips, just as if they were joined together. .

That said, if you split a clip into two clips in iMovie (Modify/Split Clip) then you can select the two clips and do Modify/Join Clips to join them back together again. Or you can do Edit/Undo Split to join them.

However, separate clips that are imported into iMovie cannot be joined together with the Mofify/Join Clips command. The command will be grayed out as you have found. The only way to join them together is to export the separate clips from iMovie to your desktop as one movie. That will result in the clips being joined together. Then reimport the movie back into iMovie.
