HomePod automations with audio do not work

I can manually get my HomePod Mini to play audio. But no automations involving audio work - and clicking the "test automation" button does not work either.

That is to say, I cannot get an automation to start, resume or pause audio. And I cannot test any automations doing those things. This applies to Ambient Sounds, and to everything available via Apple Music (I have an Apple Music subscription).

I also have an IKEA/Sonos speaker set up in HomeKit and all audio automations do work on this speaker.

My HomePod Mini is running tvOS 17.5 (21L569) with no updates listed as available under Home Settings > Software Update. I have been setting up the automations on an iPhone 13 running iOs 17.5, and also tried testing them on a MacBook Air (2018) running MacOS Sonoma 14.5

Any idea why this would be happening?

Managed to speak to Apple support over the phone (although when I logged in at first it said I would have to pay because it was out of the warranty period - but it was in fact free).

They were very helpful. I deleted and then re-installed the VPN app on my phone, and now it works. In case anybody else has this problem that was the solution that worked for me.

Glad they were helpful. I’ve never had to pay for them to help me over the phone. I just ask Siri to call 1-800-MY-APPLE that’s for North America.
