What could be causing my iPod Classic to have a blank screen and not appear in Finder?

For some reason my iPod classic stopped working, a blank screen and nothing appearing in finder. After a few forced reboots (select and menu presses) and attempts to restore it's now back to being seen as a hard drive in finder (calendar, contact folders etc) but that's all. I no longer get a finder window that allows me to sync etc. On the iPod itself it has all the menu items, but no actual music files. In disk utility it's showing and from the space available I've obviously deleted all the music files, which is fine, well it would be if there was a way of syncing again.

I've tried various scenarios of rebooting the iPod and opening Apple Music but no success.

Any ideas?

I've now managed to reset the iPod, it's effectively fresh with no music as if new. Scroll wheel and everything seems to be completely fine.

However, it appears in the left side of Apple Music and when you double click it says it's open in a finder window, except it isn't. Again you can see it it the finder as a hard drive and click. If I right click on the icon in Apple Music and ask it to sync nothing happens, presumably because it doesn't know what to sync. How do I get it to appear properly in finder so I have the list of options to configure?
