Why is Siri unable to play music from my Apple Music library?

When I updated my iPhone to iOS 17.5, Siri will not play music from my library that is on my phone. Previously all I had to say was "Play playlist New Stuff" and Siri would start playing the first song in the play list. I do not have an apple music subscription and shouldn't need one for Siri to play the music in my library. Now when I ask Siri to play music it says "Looks like Apple Music can't play that." I had this problem a year or two ago after a previous update. The solution was to add "from my library" to the request. After a later update I did not need to append with "from my library." The Music setting does have an option to "Show Apple Music" but I have it turned off. I toggled it on and off and still have the same problem. Why is this happening again? I've googled around but none of the solutions have helped. Does anyone know how to fix this?

Made another call to Apple Tech Support (5/29/2024). Evidently, many have this issue. Because of all the calls Apple is aware of this. My guess is that there will be another software update to fix this Siri (music) issue.

I have posted to this thread before but as it appears the problem has not gone away yet, I thought I would add my current status.


I have installed iOS 18 on my iPhone 14. I can tell Siri to play one of my playlists and it works just fine while I’m sitting here holding my iPhone in my hand. But if I am in the car with Apple CarPlay running, when I tell Siri to play a playlist she says something like, “Apple Music can’t do that right now.“


The only time I need this function to work is in the car. It used to work, but it has been broken for months. Come on Apple.

Today is July 3, 2024. This has still not been resolved. I used to be able to ask Siri to play a certain playlist…Now Siri responds that “I could not find Favorites in your Apple Music library”…even if Apple Music is open and showing the actual playlist.


If I ask Siri to play a certain song by artist and title name, it used to play the song….Now Siri gives me the response, “ I could not find “whatever, by so and so” in your Apple Music library”


This is completely unacceptable. Is this just a push to get more Apple Music subscribers? What about all the music that has been purchased through Apple Music(iTunes)

Just spent nearly an hour on a phone call with Apple Support. Previously I had been able to use Siri to play music directly on the iPhone (something I never actually need to do) but it never worked on CarPlay. I had hoped iOS 18 might fix this but it has simply levelled the playing field between iPhone and CarPlay - any request to play any music on iPhone or CarPlay results in 'Looks like Apple Music can't play that'. Siri responds perfectly to commands to open Maps and plan a route - it's just Music that fails.


After explaining the above, then sharing my screen and going through lots of settings, there was no solution. The final suggestion, after I'd been passed up the support command line, was to reset my phone to factory settings and restore from a backup. This is something that will take hours with no guarantee it will work so I stopped at this point - the possible 'fix' appears to be worse than the problem and I need my phone too much to be able to afford this downtime.


While the staff were trying their best, what struck me was that they appear to have no knowledge of how many thousands of us are suffering this issue. It's like they are on another planet.

Updated to iOS 18.1 and enabled Apple Intelligence to get the “new” Siri experience, in the hopes that it would resolve this issue.


No go. Still get the same message when I ask Siri to play a playlist when connected to CarPlay.


Extremely frustrated with Apple at this point. This is a serious degradation in functionality for CarPlay, and forces me to interact with the screen unnecessarily.

They still push the Apple Music subscription and it's irritating as "H". I am a long time Apple user and love the brand dearly, however I don't like "forced ads" on any level. I already have Sirius and have no use for Apple Music period. How many different ways can I turn down the offers? I do agree with you about the updates to fix issues. Apple is pretty good with that.

I updated from 17.4.1 to 17.5.1 and am having the same issue. If I ask siri to play something, it just says it's doing so but doesn't. Also, whether I have the cell connection for Music turned on or off, it ends with a complaint that "There was a network problem getting Apple Music". A cell connection shouldn't be needed for music on my own library and it's squawked that at me since iOS 16, and now it says it even if I have it allowed to use cellular data.
