When screen sharing, what does "locked" mean?

When I am using Screen Sharing to access another Mac, the Screen Sharing window shows the name of the other Mac, and directly below that, the word "Locked".

What is locked?

What does its being locked mean?

How can the lock be turned on and off?

It looks to me like this is because Screen Sharing is configured to connect to the remote Mac using "High Performance" mode.

I think that's what's going on is that "High Performance" mode uses a virtual display that bypasses the physical displays, and "Standard Mode" just echos what's on the physical display(s).

In any case, if I set "High Performance" mode then it says (Locked) and if I set "Standard Mode" it doesn't
