Card not added. Contact card issuer for more information

I used to be able to add my card to Apple Pay but it randomly stopped working a few months ago for no reason.

Adding my card to Apple Pay on my old iPhone SE works but not on my current iPhone 11 Pro Max (it used to work).

I have tried network resetting my phone, updating to latest iOS, adding the card through "Payment Cards" in settings, and contacting my card issuer but nothing seems to work.

My card issuer didn't know and said it is due to "security settings" on my device, but I used to be able to add the cards perfectly fine and I did not change any settings but it stopped working.

Are there any fixes for this?

Are you trying to add your payment method to your Apple Wallet, Apple ID Account or both?

OK, great. After you agree to the terms and conditions Apple sends the T&C ID and the 3 digit CVV security code, and certain information from your iPhone. The bank then uses this information to decide if they want to approve adding the card to the Wallet app.

There are two things we can try. But usually this is a bank issue (or Payment Network). If you’re using a VPN it must be turned off, software deleted and profile removed.

Please follow this path,

iPhone > Settings app > Privacy & Security > Location Services (top of screen) > Location Service ON > Wallet > While Using App and Precise Location ON

When checking these settings, please toggle them to another setting and then toggle them back to the correct settings.

If those settings are correct, you can try resetting Network Settings.

Reset your network settings

If you're using iOS or iPadOS 15 or later, tap Settings > General > Transfer or Reset [Device] > Reset > Reset Network Settings.

If you're using iOS or iPadOS 14 or earlier, tap Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings.

This also resets Wi-Fi networks and passwords, cellular settings, and VPN and APN settings that you've used before.

The issue is the banks or in some cases the Payment Network (Visa, Mastercard etc.). There could be an issue with the terms and conditions or the CVV code. Some banks are using rotating CVV numbers and that may be part of the issue. Some banks use the Payment Network to do the verification and they may be declining the card.

These issues are device specific and adding it to another device, is not part of the issue.

There is also a tokenization that is part of the provisioning process. You can check with the bank and ask them to remove the tokens they attached to the card. This again could be the payment network attaching tokens that need to be removed. The bank would need to ask the Payment Network to remove the tokens they’ve attached.
