basic. How to move clips to timeline
How do I divide one long 45min clip into its component parts, and then move these to the timeline?

If it is "one long clip" how does it have "component parts"
If I understand you correctly, you need to drag it to the timeline, split the clip into "components" and then you can drag them back to the library or rearrange them on the line.

Many thanks Keith. My problem is that there are already clips from another short movie on the timeline. Do I just drag the new "one long clip" on top of these, and will the existing long timeline then disappear? Where do I find basic information as to how to manage the three basic windows; the left window with the clips, the right window with the movie, and the bottom long window with the timeline? Should I just have the left and right windows, how do I create a bottom timeline window?
Easiest to insert the whole clip into the timeline, and then to a Modify/Split clip at the in-point and out-point of each segment. Then drag the segments around to insert them where you want.
