Video streams displaying ads pause if I switch to a new Safari tab

I am watching video streams (eg YouTube or TV program streams) using Safari 17.2.1 on Ventura 13.6.3. These streams include ad breaks which can last several minutes. In older versions of Safari I discovered that I could switch to a different Safari tab or window and the stream would continue playing, which was great as I didn't want to watch the ads. Now, however, if I do this during an ad, the stream pauses indefinitely, forcing me to watch all of the ads. This only affects the ads. You can still switch tabs during the rest of the program without pausing the stream. Is there any way I can stop this happening as I don't want to watch the ads and I don't want to pay for the premium ad free streams?
