You might get that message if the media is located in the cloud, in which case you would need to download the media so that iMovie will recognize it.
BTW, when you refer to “iPhoto” I assume that you mean the Photos app, since iPhoto was discontinued years ago.

that seems archaic that an apple app (iMovie) doesn’t accept photos from the cloud!
anyway, I will adhere to your advice.
and yes, I mean Photo (will never get the hang of artificial nomenclature 😂)
I’m not sure that it will cure the problem, but it wouldn’t hurt to try it with a couple of clips.
