Do I need NTFS for my WD passport external hard disk

Thank you for your reply but as a computer semi illiterate what does that mean? Should I be using NTFS for my Time Machine backup to my WD Passport external hard drive? It seems to have been running quite happily without it but am I missing something?
Only if you want to write to it without reformatting it.

No, you shouldn't. Leave it as is; keeping volumes formatted as NTFS, or converting them to it, is only useful if you're going to use them on Windows.
