Apple ID Verification Code disappears too quickly

trying to supply 2 factor auth for my iphone from my mac but the message disappears before I can respond to it. already updated both iphone and mac to latest versions and restarted. tried toggling on and off both wifi and airplane mode. tried using a verification code obtained from mac's system settings but just got the spinning wheel of death on my iphone.
