Share video from iMovie ver 10.4 on MacBook Pro - change of aspect ratio

I am using iMovie version 10.4 on a MacBook Pro 2021, chip: Apple M1 Pro, mac OS 2 Sonoma 14.2.1, to convert six, .dv video files created in an old version of iMovie (aspect ratio 4:3). So far the conversions performed on my current Macbook Pro have produced MPEG 4 files in a 16:9 aspect ratio. Does my version of iMovie (10.4) enable creation of a file in 4:3 format for viewing on social media, or televisions. If it is possible, where would I find the instructions. Alternatively is there another way to combine the .dv files (4:3) and retain the existing format.

Hi, Olias1,

The Fit button is located below the crop button, in the crop controls that appear when one clicks on the crop button. (The controls may be the drop down menu that others have described.)

You can make a global change by selecting a number of photos in a group, and then clicking on the crop button, and then the fit button.

Another way set set the Fit option is to set the project for a Fit crop in the iMovie preferences. Before you start your project, click on the Movie menu item and, from the drop down menu, click on Preferences.

A preferences box will then appear where you can set the photo placement at Fit.

All the clips that are added to the project will then bet set to Fit.

Rich: Thanks so much for taking the time to answer my question- with screenshots. Much appreciated!

Sometimes after clicking the crop button I see the Style menu you describe, but sometimes all I see is a button that says "Crop" where the Style menu would appear:

I haven't figured out yet what causes the disparity. Might you have any thoughts or suggestions?

Thanks again!

iMovie has a 16:9 aspect ratio that cannot be changed. Footage recorded in a 4:3 ratio should be displayed with the crop “Fit” option. It will have black bars to make it fit the 16:9 screen. The bars can be trimmed off after export by doing a screen recording with the Command-Shift-5 feature and cropping out the bars. That is, drag select just the video portion, excluding the black bars, so that only the video portion records.

Hi Rich! Thanks for your advice! I have a similar problem as the original questioner- old .mov files in non-16:9 ratio that are being cropped upon export. Two questions: 1) After clicking on the "crop" button, I can not find the "Fit" button you and others describe. Where should it be located (I also don't see a drop down menu others describe)? 2) If I have 50 clips in an iMovie, do I need to "Fit" each clip individually, or is is possible to make a global change? Any advice would be greatly appreciated! (iMac Retina 5K 27inch 2017, 3.8GHz Quad Core i5, Ventura 13.6.4; iMovie 10.4). Thanks!
