Are you taking "live photos?" When you swipe between photos, you'll see a minute amount of motion. If you press and hold a photo, it'll show about 2 seconds of motion - one second recorded before and one second after the photo was taken. That should be turned off for most photos because you'll almost never use it, and the videos will be what's taking up all your space.
You can plug into a computer and allow access, then look at the folders. Sort by file type and delete the videos you don't need. That will dramatically decrease your storage use.
Just be sure to note the full size videos you do want to keep before removing all of a type though. For that, you can click on a video in your phone, click the "i" at the bottom, and note the file name. It'll be listed in light text under the date it was taken.
What is the file format of your photos? If your iPhone camera is set to take the photos in the RAW format, a single photo could be using 80MB of storage. Then 6000 photos alone would need 480GB of storage.
And how many videos are on your iPhone? Which If you are taking high resolution videos, they can also need a lot of storage.
Are your photos full resolution originals?
If they are then offload them to iCloud (Settings - Photos - Optimise iPhone Storage) and have the photos replaced with smaller versions. Your full resolution photos are still available for download from iCloud.
This should lower the storage demands.
