upgrade from 10.10x
I am trying to upgrade from 10.10.5 on a newly restored older model Macbook Pro to the newest OS this computer can run. What is the best way to do that?

It does seem wrong to me too. Longer story is I erased the computer using Disk Utility in order to give it to a family member. Boot after first attempt to wipe it had a new Macintosh HD - Data folder with my old stuff and when attempting to do software updates it asked for my old admin password. Attempted another Erase with Disk Utility and did the same. Got on the phone with Apple Support, did another Erase and it took my computer way back in time to this. I've attempted to go to the link you sent to update OS and it seems to go through the motions to install the OS (Sierra for example) but the install takes less than 5 seconds so I know something is not right.
App Store/Software Update says I have no available updates. About window says OS is "Unarchived" and where the icon for the OS would be is an X.
Is there a link to get to Ventura directly?

You can't run Ventura. You said that machine was a MacBook Pro running 10.10.5. No MacBook Pro that has a model year of 2016 or later can run anything as early as 10.10.5. It follows that your MacBook Pro can't be new enough to run either Ventura or Sonoma.
Good to hear that Monterey (which is still one of the "most recent three") installed successfully.
It would appear that you have an Early or Mid 2015 MacBook Pro. Those are the only ones that can run both Yosemite 10.10.5 and Monterey.
What is the model year of the MacBook Pro?
The model year of a MacBook Pro is available at Apple menu > About This Mac.
An Early 2008 through mid 2009 MacBook Pro can be upgraded to El Capitan 10.11.6 but no later version. See: How to download and install macOS - Apple Support
A mid 2010 through late 2011 MacBook Pro can be upgraded to High Sierra 10.13.6 but no later version. See: How to download and install macOS - Apple Support
Reply if yours is later than the above.
A 2017 MacBook Pro can be upgraded to the current version of Ventura macOS 13. See: How to download and install macOS - Apple Support
However, something doesn't seem right. A 2017 wouldn't be able to run something as old as 10.10.5 mentioned in your original post. That is a 2014 operating system.
You'll have to do some interim Upgra
des, but...
Start up from macOS Recovery
Option-⌘-R
Upgrade to the latest macOS compatible with your Mac.
In Disk Utility>View, select Show all Devices, highlight the top left entry.
APFS won't work for Sierra or earlier, Sierra or earlier needs MacOS Extended Journaled. High Sierra won't work for APFS on earlier Macs.
What has often worked for others is to use this Restore Method instead of CMD+r keys...
Option-⌘-R
Upgrade to the latest macOS compatible with your Mac.

Thanks so much! Option-⌘-R did the trick to get me to Monterey! (If only that would get me to Monterey CA that quickly :) Happy New Year all. Thanks so much
2015 makes sense. Sorry to confuse. I was seeing the Copyright on the bottom of the About > Overview screen and at the time it said 1983- 2017 after the erase. Now it says copyright through 2023. Here is the system info as it is now with Monterey 12.7.2
Model Name: MacBook Pro
Model Identifier: MacBookPro12,1
Processor Name: Dual-Core Intel Core i5
Processor Speed: 2.9 GHz

It is a 2017. Thanks for the quick response
Great to hear my friend! :)
