Honda Accord 2016-2017 CarPlay Crashing

Since iOS 14 to now iOS 17.2, the 2016 and 2017 Honda accord models have had difficulties when displaying navigation (Apple maps, google maps, and Waze)

This issue is well documented on the Accord Forums website Driveaccord.net.

Issues seem isolated to GPS navigation.

Waze and Google often encounter the most issues.

Apple maps can be used in the widget home view, but full screen Apple Maps results in frequent crashes.

With Apple Maps certain environments, like cities with complex 3D elements cause the most issues, making navigation impossible through CarPlay.

An option to turn off these 3D maps elements would at least fix the issues with maps.

This is a widespread and critical issue, please address.

iPhone 13, iOS 17

This issue has been known for years. I'm certain I am one of the first to bring it to apple back in 2018. Apple advised that CarPlay is a platform and it's the responsibility of the car manufacture to ensure stability. Updating your phone does not fix this. The issue is Honda used a cheap manufacture for this generation of car. They went out of business, so no patches or updates were available for the deck. As Apple and Android pushed new updates, the infotainment system didn't know what to do with them, so by default, it locks, freezes or crashes. Odyssey owners sued Honda and Honda settled. Accord owners couldn't get their act together and at a certain point, Honda said, "Sorry, none of your units are under warranty".

The only fix is getting rid of the car and that is exactly what I did. I drove Honda exclusively for 30 years and because of this, I'll never buy another. When you don't stand behind your product, it's clear you don't want me to be your customer.

Please check country-specific features on Apple Maps. Everthing is not available in all countries.

There are a few troubleshooting steps and potential workarounds you can try:

  1. Ensure that both your iPhone's iOS (17.2.1) and your car's infotainment system are running the latest software versions. Sometimes, updates can address known issues and bugs.
  2. In the Honda Accord, you can try resetting the CarPlay connection. To do this, go to Settings on the car's infotainment system, locate CarPlay settings, and delete your iPhone from the connected devices list. Reconnect the iPhone and check if the issue persists.
  3. Within your iPhone settings, navigate to Privacy > Location Services and check if these apps have the necessary permissions. Sometimes, restricted permissions can cause issues. If you need help with CarPlay - Apple Support (IN)
  4. If your iPhone isn't detected by CarPlay, make sure CarPlay isn't restricted. Go to Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions. If Content & Privacy Restrictions is turned on, tap Allowed Apps and make sure CarPlay is enabled.
  5. Go to Settings > General > CarPlay, tap your car and then tap Forget This Car. Then set up CarPlay again.

If the problem persists despite these troubleshooting steps, keep an eye out for future iOS updates or software patches from Honda that might specifically address these CarPlay-related issues.

If none of the above steps resolve the issue, it is recommended to reach out to Apple Support or visit an authorized service center for further assistance. They can provide specific guidance based on your device model and iOS version.

Are you using wired or wireless CarPlay?

Check your connection to your CarPlay stereo:

  • If you have a wired connection, try connecting again with a different USB cable to a different USB port if you have one.
  • If you have a wireless connection, make sure Bluetooth is turned on under Settings > Bluetooth on your iPhone. Then go to Settings > Wi-Fi, and make sure Wi-Fi is also turned on. Tap the CarPlay network, and check that Auto-Join is turned on.

In addition, around 2020, Honda released a patch. It was $125, but guess what, as soon as Apple and Android released a new update, that patch didn't hold, the system didn't know what to do and it would lock and crash. I assume that is why you don't know about it. Honda probably pulled the patch from their website once it was clear it didn't hold. My car was bad, not only would CarPlay freeze, but my dash lights would go out, so I couldn't see my speed at night, no infotainment meant no audio, so I would be driving listening to road noise. Like I said, there is no fix, no coverage and recovery. You have a car with a broken media system.
