Running Google Drive or any "cloud" backup system?
I just killed Google Drive out of my Top Right System Tray; Hasn't flashed since. If you're not running Google Drive, click Finder & type console. Launch the app; Under all messages see if you have something logging an error that corresponds to the flashes.

PROBLEM SOLVED! Thanks for the help on that. Was getting pretty annoying.

Am running google drive & dropbox & calendar might be using icloud although tried to set up syncing wirelessly with ipad. Is only affecting separate time machine HD & one other backup disk although two other disks on desktop have custom icons as well (startup & a scratch drive) which are unaffected. Doubt if google drive accesses the backup or TM drives directly but it might i guess. Thanks for the links tho as it clearly is a thing. Will start with boot in safe mode to see if additional maintenance scripts have any effect. Just happened again but only to the backup & not TM drive that time ..
Sorry these postings are a bit random - just noticed backup drive icon flicker exactly on the hour when i know a CCC task is scheduled so the drive is being written to .. system log in console shows :
'AMPDevicesAgent[650]: Entered:_AMMuxedDeviceDisconnected, mux-device:48'
nothing much showing from CCC in logs ..
The flickering sometimes seems to coincide with a notification message top right from calendar ..
Problem of flickering icons still here. Re: "have you got Google Drive installed?" - don't have Google Drive client locally installed, access it only from Google apps in browser. One drive is being backed-up on the hour by CCC & icon flickers when being written-to. Other drive is for Time Machine, flickering is twice per hour mebbe ..
(Am not going through resetting NVRAM etc, would make no difference ..)
For info - only app that should write to the backup drive is Carbon Copy Cloner & presumeably it's only the system that writes to the dedicated TM drive ..
