AirTags not working

I have 2 Apple AirTags which I have on my dog’s collars. If my dogs are near my iPhone their airtags work perfectly and will track them around my yard. My problem is that as soon as my dogs get out of close proximity to my iPhone their AirTags will no longer track them at all until they are back in close proximity to my phone. The airtags have obviously both connected to my phone because if they are right beside me I can see their location on my “find my friends” but only if they are close to me and my phone. Can you please let me know what I’ve done wrong or what I need to do to fix this problem because the way these AirTags are working now makes them completely useless. Please help.

The way, Apple AirTags work is by having multiple Apple devices near them. They do not have to be owned by you for example. If a friend has an apple device and your dog is near them your AirTag and your friends device will hook up and the AirTag will use your friends phone GPS because the AirTag does not have a gps device inside.

I am guessing your AirTag cannot find an Apple device with Bluetooth enabled that way it can send its location.

Thanks for replying. Wouldn’t the fact that I can track both airtags on my phone as long as they are near my phone mean that they are connecting to my phone’s Bluetooth?? What are your suggestions on what I can do to fix this. I don’t know if it matters but the AirTags are brand new and the phone they are connecting to is an iPhone 15plus. All three devices have had the newest updates that are available installed on them

I understand what you are and it makes sense but I just sent my daughter and her husband and both their iPhones for a drive with my dog that has a AirTag on his collar for a drive. My find my friends app showed my dog with his AirTag in my driveway and tracked them as they backed out onto the road but as soon as they left the driveway I was no longer able to track the AirTag even though there were 2 iPhones in the car with it. I’m so confused
