Type character malicious software

Hi, I was wondering if someone can please help me my Mac just had a pop up window saying “type character.system” will damage your computer in a box, and it has the report malware to Apple to protect other users box is ticked! It says this file was downloaded on an unknown date. When I try to move this to the trash, it asks for my password do you know if this is a scam or do I need to enter my password would really appreciate some advice. Thank you so much.

First, start your Mac in "Safe Mode": How to use safe mode on your Mac - Apple Support. Starting in Safe Mode takes longer than usual so let it finish.

While in that mode, drag the following items to the Trash:

Then, restart your Mac normally and confirm the alert messages cease to appear.

Notes:

  1. The "Malwarebytes" product appears to be installed, or was not completely uninstalled. You can see for yourself that it did nothing to address the "<app> will damage your computer" message. It's your decision whether to keep it installed or not, but no product can provide absolute protection from becoming deceived into willfully installing junk. Recognition and avoidance is the only effective defense. For more regarding that subject, read How to install adware - Apple Community.
  2. Please be advised that non-Apple "drive manager" or "utility" products are never required on Macs. Using Western Digital "drive managers" and products like it have been known to cause spontaneous and unrecoverable disk erasure. The same recommendation applies to it.

DebStock apparently that Mac is suffering from a more extensive affliction than the "... damage your computer" message. The inability to do something as simple as opening a app downloaded from the Internet significantly hinders troubleshooting.

I wonder if the Western Digital "drive manager" product has anything to do with that, but this is wildly speculative.

Before we give up please try this one last suggestion: restart your Mac in "Safe Mode": Use safe mode on your Mac - Apple Support and determine if the EtreCheck app can be opened while in that mode.

However — and this is important — generating the EtreCheck report while running in Safe Mode will not reveal most if not all potential factors affecting that Mac. The objective for now is strictly limited to determining if you can even open the app.

Then, restart your Mac normally (not "Safe Mode") and try launching the EtreCheck app again.

Please write back with your results.

Am I to understand you downloaded the EtreCheckPro.zip file and opened it while in Safe Mode, but Terminal opened instead?

Obviously that's not supposed to happen. Not in normal mode, not in safe mode, not ever.

Given all these obstructions to progress, I doubt I can offer much more assistance to you in this particular thread. Please do me a favor and post a brand new question along those lines. When you do that, I suggest describing the inability to open the EtreCheck Pro app, so posting a question with that title will attract the attention you need. "Downloaded EtreCheck but I can't open it" might be a good title.

In that new question, describe that you tried downloading it several times but the initial screenshot appeared (the application can't be opened). Then you tried Safe Mode, and Terminal opened instead.

Something is going on that needs attention from a greater number of people, and posting a brand new question will elicit that interest. Click the Ask the Community link above. I will monitor that thread for replies, and provide any insight I might come up with between now and then.

After resolving that problem we can turn our attention back to the "... will damage your computer" message that brought you here to begin with.
