Backup photos from the iPhone to an external drive

I would like to back up the photos I have on my iPhone to an external sandisk ssd drive, I have a macbook but it doesn't have enough space to hold all my photos to transfer the photos to the external drive. How can I transfer all the photos from the iPhone to the drive without the possibility of transferring 1,000 photos at a time.

All at once.

"Backup photos from the iPhone to an external drive: Thank you for the answer. : I have a sandisk ssd drive and my photos are backed up in the icloud, and when I try to download from the icloud to the drive it only lets me download a thousand photos at a time, and I have a lot of photos. I want something that can be connected and it transfers all the photos to me automatically straight to the drive "

You are welcome.

Use the Photos App:

Enable Photos in iCloud Setting on your Mac. Then, plug the Hard Drive into your Mac. Then, through use of a Finder window Drag & Drop it all from the Photos app into the Hard Drive.

Using the words "plug the Hard Drive into your Mac" I am referring to an external hard drive:

Use the Photos App:

Enable Photos in iCloud Setting on your Mac. Then, plug in an external Hard Drive into your Mac. Then, through use of a Finder window Drag & Drop it all from the Photos app into the Hard Drive.

Transferring Photos from Phone to External Hard Drive:

If you wanted to, you could upload these to iCloud, and then plug in the external drive tot he computer. From there, Drag & drop these to the external drive, through use of the Photos app and a Finder window. Given 5GB is not enough, it wouldn't be uploaded and then transferred all at once. So, if you want to use iCloud Plan for a bit, then consider upgrading your iCloud Storage Plan and perform the same transfer method.

Just to see if anything has changed.

I would like to move all the photos on my iPhone directly to an external hard drive.

No passing through iCloud, Photo Library etc. as I have not enough free space on any of those.

When I

  • connect an external hd to my Mac
  • connect the iPhone to my Mac with a cable
  • open Photos and select iPhone
  • select all the photos

all the options in "Export" are greyed out.

Is this possible ?
