Laptop Keyboard brightness not working

I have a MacBook Pro laptop, 2019 model with a T2 chip. The light on my key board is turned off. When I try to adjusted it by the keyboard brightness slider button, in drag it to the right but it won’t stay. I know the light on the keyboard works because when I boot it up, it lights up. I don’t have the sensor by the camera covered. I did turn it off, then hold the power button for 7 seconds, wait a few seconds then reboot. (This was a suggestion from Apple in support) but that did not fix it. Does anyone have any idea why the brightness adjuster won’t slide and stay on a setting and only stay at off? Any help would be appreciated.

On an Intel Mac you can

try resetting NVRAM/PRAM Reset NVRAM on your Mac - Apple Support

NVRAM will reset:

AppleUSBVHCIBCE Root Hub Simulation

IOUSBHostDevice

Touch Bar Backlight

Apple T2 Controller

FaceTime HD Camera (Built-in)

Headset

Ambient Light Sensor

Touch Bar Display

Apple Internal Keyboard / Trackpad

if no resolve there is no harm in resetting the System Management Controller to rule it out:

Reset the SMC of your Mac - Apple Support

You can try running the user Diagnostic and see if it kicks out an error code:

Use Apple Diagnostics to test your Mac - Apple Support

if it is software—
