What would disable an iMac desktop, and adjacent Macbook, and two external harddrives, all at the same time? None are usable now.

I tried booting without the drives. One of the drives says I can read it, but I can no longer write to it. I tried everything I could think of to restore High Sierra to the desktop and to the laptop. Neither will update to anything later than High Sierra, and High Sierra will not run. I finally bought a used macbook pro that runs Catalina.

OK, when MacOS can read a drive but not write, it's almost always due to the drive dying, it remains readable to help get your data off if it, but no writing as that could destroy all chaces of recovering data.
Have you tried booting without the drives connected?
Is there a switch in the AC line somewhere?
Is there any sign of like?
A power surge would be one possibility.
How unusable are they?
They won't boot no matter what I do, and I've tried everything I can find.
The HardDrives, are they Bus powered or do they have their own AC power?
Checked any fuses or Circuit Breakers?
