Safari causing iPhone to heat up and drain battery with certain web pages

I’m using iPhone 13 mini on iOS 17.1.1

I have a problem where Safari will cause my phone to rapidly heat up during normal web browsing. The issue only occurs with certain pages (often large pages with lots of images or JavaScript). An example web page that causes it to heat up is Reddit.

The issue causes severe battery drain at about 1% per minute.

This occurs when all other apps have been fully closed. Force closing safari causes the phone temperature to return to normal.

Some additional info:

My phone’s battery health is at 89%.

I have plenty of free storage space.

I’ve done a reset and restored a backup.

I tried using an adblocker (Wipr) which did not help.

I have deleted browsing history and cookies.

Is there anything else I can try?

Same here on iPhone 13 Pro. Reddit website is absolutely destroying phone battery.
